What do I, as a student, do for each case?

The study and solution of each case is divided into a predictable set of steps.  Each of these steps is designed to give you the information required to complete the case.  If you actively do each of these steps you can be successful in the class.  Each step is also designed to mimic how you will be working in the business world.

While the amount of time for each case may vary, the steps for each case never do.  The table C – 1 shows the amount of class time allocated for each step in the nine cases. To see which cases are of the 5 and 10 day varieties select the schedule link.

Table C-1:   Days per Step by Case Type

Step Number 5 Day Case 10 Day Case
#1 0 days 0 days
#2 1 day 3 days
#3 1 day 1 day
#4 & 5 2 days 5 days
#6 1 day 1 day

Since you will be doing these steps repeatedly a description of what each step consists of is given here.

Step 1 – Individual Study: Study the resources given in the case to learn what is needed to complete the case.  Prior to the class period for Step 2 you are required to post at least one meaningful, unique question regarding the content of the case.  You do this by posting your question on the blog page containing the case.  All of this is to be done as an individual and on your own time.

Step 2 – Team Teaching:  Meet as a team to teach each other what you have learned and record any remaining questions.  You will also be required, as a team, to answer at least 1 question posted by one of your team members and post the answer on the blog.  You will then attempt to answer the other questions posted by your team members.

Each of your team members have strengths and weaknesses.  This will mean that some of them may have figured out something you did not and can therefor help you learn it.  You will also have figured out something they did not and so you can share with them.

Step 3 – Return and Report: Meet as a class to discuss the questions from the blog that have not been answered or that are not clearly understood.  You can also raise new questions at this time.

This is called ‘Return and Report’.  This discussion is lead by the instructor and gives you the chance to help other teams and get their help.  They have questions and so do you.  Each team can help the others learn what was missed during this discussion.

Step 4 – Solve Case:  Meet as a team and as individuals to create the design, tests, and the solution for the case.  Here the instructor is available for you to ask questions as are all of the members of the class.  Make sure that you make personal connections with people outside of your team.  They can be of great help, and so can you, as the teams complete the cases.

Step 5 – Create Assessment:   Your team will create one small, simple case that covers the points to be learned in the case you have been working on.  You should design it so it can be completed in 1 hour.  Your team will email this similar case to the instructor.

Step 6 – Individual Assessment:  The instructor will have selected one of the similar cases created by the teams in your class.  It is redistributed to you as an assessment.  You complete this assessment on your own not as a team.  The solution to the selected assessment case is due at the end of the hour.
