Class Introduction

September 9, 2008

All work in this class is driven by this document.  Read it and understand it well.

Business is an amazing and interesting world.  This course is designed to teach you many things about Java as well as give you a flavor of what working in the business world is like regardless of if you will be working writing software, doing networking, designing databases, working as a project manager, or working in any other part of IT.  As a student you start the class in the programming world and as the class progresses you gradually move into the Software Engineering world.
The simple design process:
  1. Think
  2. Design
  3. Create Tests
  4. Create Code

is taught and stressed.  Each of these steps will give you the information you need to complete the next step.  Because of this, using this process will decrease the amount of time you spend working on a solution.

By working well with your team you will learn how to work in the business environment.  In that environment everyone works in teams.  The instructor will assist you in working with your team.  You will not be given a team grade for any assignments.

In business all reviews of workers are done as individuals.  In this class ll grades given are individual grades.  All work done as teams is for learning purposes so you don’t need to worry about getting it graded.  Team work is not graded.

As you progress through each of the 8 cases you will discover that you will need to revisit the designs and code created for the previous case and modify them to use in the current case.

This process of evaluation and modification is standard operating procedure in most companies.

The instructor for this class acts in two roles.  The first is as an instructor and the second is as the development manager for your team.  By acting in these two roles your instructor helps you to learn how you will be learning new information in the business world

Have fun!

Somehow society has changed an activity that is intrinsically fun, learning, into a painful process.  Let’s put the fun back into learning.
